Why Decay Is Invisible Until It Isn’t

Every attribute in your data model needs a named owner. Dimensions may sit with logistics. Supplier specs may sit with buying. Pricing may sit with trading. Without ownership, nobody fixes a decayed value because nobody considers it their responsibility.
Set tiered update cadences
Price and availability require near-real-time updates. Attributes and descriptions can run on change triggers or weekly review cycles. Taxonomy and category mapping need quarterly audits. Different fields decay at different rates.
Monitor the leading indicators
Track Merchant Center error count weekly, Amazon listing quality score distribution monthly, attribute coverage by category monthly, and feed-crawl agreement daily for price and availability. These show decay before it reaches performance.
Enforce quality gates at launch
No product goes live without meeting minimum standards for its category. A jacket without a waterproof attribute cannot be published. A supplement without nutritional data cannot be listed. Gates stop new decay from entering the system.
Build a supplier data SLA
When suppliers update product specifications, they should notify you and provide revised data. Retailers that prevent spec-change decay formalize this expectation in supplier contracts.
